Event Details

On September 22, 1780, a persistent American Colonel ordered a cannonade on the British ship “The Vulture” in Haverstraw Bay, forcing the ship to retreat downstream. As a result, the British Major John Andre was stranded in the Lower Hudson Valley.  His subsequent capture in nearby Tarrytown thwarted Benedict Arnold’s plan to relinquish West Point to the British.  This talk, based on new primary source research, describes these key events and their impact on the ultimate outcome of the Revolutionary War.
