Margaret Hardenbroeck was the foremost trader of the new Dutch colony in present day New York. She and her fellow she-merchants were not only brave, strong, and wealthy but also passed along the torch of female empowerment to other women who came after them. This talk will celebrate Women’s History Month by exploring the life of Hardenbroeck, the most famous she-merchant, and several who followed her and became devout church builders, savvy political wives, innovative architects, staunch suffragists, well-known philanthropists, and brilliant entrepreneurs.
Jean Zimmerman has published numerous works of fiction and nonfiction, including The Women of the House: How a Colonial She-Merchant Built a Mansion, a Fortune, and a Dynasty (Harcourt, 2006). She lives in Hastings-on-Hudson and is currently writing a memoir about her experiences in the world of trees. You can learn more about Zimmerman’s work at jeanzimmerman.com.
